Down is wonderfully warm, but let's be honest: it is not really sustainable. Yet sustainability is a topic that is constantly higher on the agendas of companies and consumers. This can be recognized by the demand for alternatives to animal materials. One such alternative is DuPont Sorona, which is used in Macseis body warmers and has the Oeko-Tex 100 certificate.
Sorona is an eco-fiber that is used as an alternative to down. It is a light and soft filling that contributes to the breathability of Macseis clothing. The fiber has been developed as an environmentally friendly alternative, without compromising on the quality of clothing. By choosing Sorona instead of down, companies leave a smaller footprint and use the power of nature.
Origin of Sorona
Sorona is a fiber that comes from nature. After harvesting crops, sugar or glucose is extracted from it. Then microorganisms are added to the glucose to start a fermentation process. You can compare this with the production of alcohol. The fermentation ensures natural production, so no chemical synthesis is required. Thanks to the addition of TPA, a molecular bond is created. This is how Sorona is made: a high-quality polymer - ideal for clothing.
Expressed in figures
Compared to nylon 6, Sorona's production provides:
- 30% less energy consumption
- 63% less greenhouse gas emissions
