Polo shirts: sporty, casual and a style classic
The polo shirt is an indispensable item in many wardrobes. The polo remains popular; from road workers and waiters on terraces to dental assistants and sales assistants at trade fairs. Especially with customised embroidery or printing, you radiate unity and are easily recognisable. But why did we start wearing a T-shirt with a collar?
The polo shirt originated on the sports field. If you go by the name, it started with the sport of polo. In the late 19th century, British soldiers stationed in India discovered the game of polo. They adapted the long-sleeved shirts associated with the ancient Indian game for greater comfort. The term “polo shirt” became linked to the sport as a result.
Until the 1920s, tennis matches were played in stiff white shirts that did not allow for much freedom of movement. French tennis legend René Lacoste improved on the original design of the British soldiers, creating a light, breathable shirt with short sleeves and a collar that could be turned up to protect against the sun. In addition to tennis, it also became popular with polo players, and that is how the shirt got its name.
What once started as sportswear quickly became a style classic. The polo shirt found its way into more upmarket sports such as golf and sailing. In the 1960s, there was a turnaround and it became increasingly popular as leisurewear.
Endless variations
The strength of the polo shirt lies in its versatility. It is suitable for almost any occasion: from serving on a summer terrace to pairing with smart trousers for trade fairs. Today, the polo shirt continues to evolve in both materials and fits. From classic piqué cotton to modern technical stretch fabrics, it remains both timeless and contemporary.
Due to the fabric quality and large printable surface, polo shirts are ideal for:
• Workwear and uniforms
• Schools, universities and sports clubs
• Events and team building
And the polo shirt can be worn in all seasons, you can wear it all year round! In summer, choose light fabrics and short sleeves, in winter you can go for long sleeves or combine the polo shirt with a cardigan. In spring and autumn, wear it with an undershirt underneath.
The polo shirt is therefore a versatile classic that can be combined in endless ways, from the sports field to the business world. With a small embroidered logo or a striking print, the polo shirt is a smart investment for any wardrobe.
